Who’s this for?

This qualification is aimed at those who construct and secure the steel foundations and bars that keep a building’s walls and exteriors in place.

Candidates will be required to prove they have the skills and knowledge to carry out cutting, bending, fixing and prefabricating reinforcement steel.

It is not expected that candidates working in this industry all do the same activities; the qualification is structured to ensure that there is a high degree of flexibility while still meeting the requirements of the qualification units. All work must be carried out in accordance with relevant legislation and following industry recognised safe working practices. The qualification has been developed in a way that will allow employees from companies of all sizes and specialisms equal opportunity to complete.

The standards cover the most important aspects of the job. This qualification is at Level 2, although some units may be at different levels, candidates should require minimum supervision in undertaking the job.

Qualifications are made up of a number of units that have a credit value or credits. This qualification is made up of 3 mandatory units, which have a total of 10 credits and a group of optional units. Candidates must achieve all credits from the mandatory units and a minimum of 2 optional units. This gives the qualification a minimum credit value of 48 credits

What is required from candidates?

Qualifications are now required to indicate the total qualification time (TQT), this is to show the typical time it will take someone to attain the required skills and knowledge to meet the qualification criteria, this qualification has a TQT of 440 hours.

Qualifications are also required to indicate the number of hours of teaching someone would normally need to receive in order to achieve the qualification. These are referred to as Guided Learning Hours (GLH). The GLH for this qualification is 160.
